Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Chimney Cleaning Before & After in Santa Clarita, CA

Photos tell the truth faster than any promise we could make. A chimney sweep in Santa Clarita is one of those jobs where the difference is dramatic but hidden, until you see it. Glazed creosote, packed ash, nests built against a flue wall. These gallery entries show real scenarios we handle every week in Valencia, Canyon Country, Saugus, and Newhall. The camera goes in before we touch anything, and comes out after. That’s the record.

Glazed Creosote Removal in a Canyon Country Fireplace

[PHOTO PLACEHOLDER: Before – shiny, tar-like creosote coating the flue walls. After – clean terra cotta liner visible top to bottom.]
Glazed creosote removal, Canyon Country. Before: flue walls coated with stage-three creosote. After: liner surface restored to bare clay.

This flue had gone years between sweepings, and the creosote had hardened into a glaze that a standard brush won’t move. We ran rotary chain whips through the full length of the flue, then followed with a level-two camera inspection to confirm the liner wasn’t cracked underneath. The homeowner had been told by another company they needed a liner replacement. They didn’t. A thorough mechanical sweep and a HeatShield smoke test proved the existing clay was sound.

Wood Stove Flue Packed With Ash in Agua Dulce

[PHOTO PLACEHOLDER: Before – ash and creosote nearly blocking the stovepipe. After – clean stainless steel connector pipe.]
Wood stove flue, Agua Dulce. Before: pipe diameter reduced by roughly 60 percent. After: full draft restored through the connector and chimney.

A cold winter of daily burning had left this flue so packed that the stove door was puffing smoke back into the living room. We disassembled the connector pipe, vacuumed the accumulated ash and creosote from every section, then swept the chimney with a properly sized poly brush. The homeowner lit a fire that same evening and commented the stove drew better than it had in three seasons.

Raccoon Nest Removed From a Newhall Chimney

[PHOTO PLACEHOLDER: Before – twigs, leaves, and nesting debris visible at the flue opening. After – clean smoke chamber and flue with a new stainless cap installed.]
Raccoon nest removal, Newhall. Before: nesting material packed into the smoke chamber. After: debris cleared and a new cap installed to prevent re-entry.

A homeowner noticed scratching sounds and a smell coming from the living room fireplace in late spring. The chimney cap had rusted through, and a raccoon had pulled the loose mesh aside and built a nest inside the flue. We removed the nesting material, swept and sanitized the flue after the animal had left, and installed a new stainless steel cap with proper mesh. No animals were harmed, and the entry point is closed.

Level-Two Inspection After a Creosote Chimney Fire in Saugus

[PHOTO PLACEHOLDER: Before – cracked flue tile visible on camera monitor, heat damage on the tile face. After – DuraFlex stainless steel liner installed top to bottom.]
Post-chimney-fire repair, Saugus. Before: cracked flue tiles from a creosote burn-off. After: new DuraFlex stainless liner, code-compliant and insulated.

The homeowner heard a roar from the chimney that lasted about thirty seconds and called us the next morning. Our camera inspection showed vertical cracks through three flue tiles. A sweep alone would have left an unsafe chimney. We removed the damaged tile sections and installed a DuraFlex stainless steel liner, sized for the existing firebox and sealed at both ends. The chimney now drafts correctly and is safe for another fire season.

Smoke Chamber Parging in a Valencia Home

[PHOTO PLACEHOLDER: Before – smoke chamber walls show deteriorated parging and gaps between corbeled brick. After – smooth, sealed parging on all four walls.]
Smoke chamber repair, Valencia. Before: crumbling parge coat exposing brick gaps. After: chamber walls sealed and smoothed.

This chimney pulled smoke poorly and the homeowner had learned to live with a haze in the room every time they lit a fire. The smoke chamber, the area above the damper, had lost most of its parge coat over forty years, leaving rough brick and gaps that disrupted the draft. We re-parged the chamber with a refractory mortar, smoothing the transition from firebox to flue. The difference was immediate: no more smoke spillover, and a stronger, steadier draw.

Simple Off-Season Sweep in Westridge

[PHOTO PLACEHOLDER: Before – dust and soot coating the firebox and damper. After – clean firebox, damper operating smoothly, flue clear.]
Seasonal sweep, Westridge, Santa Clarita. Before: accumulated soot and dusty damper assembly. After: firebox cleaned, damper checked and lubricated, flue swept.

Not every job is a disaster. This one was a textbook seasonal sweep before burning season. We swept the flue, cleaned the firebox, inspected the damper, and confirmed the cap was intact. The whole job took under an hour. The homeowner got a written record of the sweep and our recommendation that they schedule again after burning season. That’s the kind of chimney cleaning Santa Clarita homeowners should expect every year.
